Photo of Paul Smith - photographer

I fondly remember my first experience with a camera. I was 12 years old and my mother had purchased a black and white Polaroid. I remember it was so cool to see the image develop before my eyes.

I saved my money I made from collecting and selling worms to anglers to buy a Kodak Instamatic. I started out taking photographs of everything that fascinated me. I was hooked and so began my journey into the wonderful world of photography.

I am a self taught photographer and over the years (53 of them as of this writing) since I was 12, I’ve been experimenting with everything I can.

My first slr camera was an Olympus OM-1 and I immediately fell in love with everything Olympus. I purchased as many Zuiko lenses I could afford and started using my tripod with every shot I took.

I learned all about “color balance”, “exposure triangle”, “focal point”, “golden hour”, “golden spiral” and the “rule of thirds”.

Learning all of these technics enabled me to fine tune my instincts which helped me to see light and composition automatically.

My Stomping Grounds

About 30 years ago I moved to Gold River on Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia, Canada. My decision was based on my previous adventure of writing an article covering the Conuma River Fish Enhancement Facility for a local Comox Valley Aquaculture magazine.

While I was taking photos and collecting data for my article I was introduced to the owner of a fishing resort located beside the seapens in the ocean where the hatchery reared thier Chinook smolts before releasing them directly into the ocean.

As it turns out the owner was looking for an investment partner and heard that I also had extensive fish guiding experience and introduced himself to me. Thus began a new adventure for me where my photography and writing skills complimented my fish guiding skills.

I still reside in Gold River today and still photograph everything that catches my fancy.

It is my hope to pass along my acquired skills by teaching what I’ve learned to all who want it. I will try my best to do this in an easy to learn approach. I believe the best teacher is the “field” where you see everything as it unfolds.

I hope you enjoy my website and your journey into photography is exciting, fun and rewarding.

How I Generate Some Revenue To Help Pay The Bills

As you’ve probably noticed I earn some revenue from affiliate marketing on my website. I do this by reviewing photography products that I use myself and some I am interested in but not yet acquired. Each product seller or manufacturer that I review pays me a small fee when you purchase their product or service.

My Guarantee To You

My reviews are done with the goal of providing as much info and data so you will not have to research too much yourself. I check for things that I personally look for in photography products so you can rest assured that the products I review are those I have or will personally purchase.
